The Holiday Gift Guide 2026

Twelve handmade and vintage gift ideas for this Christmas, sorted so you can order the slow-to-make ones first.

The Holiday Gift Guide 2026

We independently choose everything we write about. Some outbound links are affiliate links, which help keep this site running at no cost to you. How we earn.

Our holiday guide is built around one practical idea: handmade takes time. So instead of sorting by price or person, we've sorted it by how early you need to order. Start at the top in early November; by the bottom, you're into last-minute territory.

For realistic dates, see our Christmas ordering timeline.

Order first: commissions and custom pieces

No. 01

A custom portrait of their home

An illustration of the house they grew up in, their first flat or a family holiday cottage. Artists usually work from your photos, so send several angles. Most need two to four weeks, so this is a November order.

No. 02

An illustrated pet portrait

For anyone whose dog or cat is basically family. Choose an artist whose style you love in their previous work, whether loose watercolour, clean line art or gouache, since that matters more than the price.

No. 03

A family birth-flower bouquet print

One flower for each family member, arranged in a single bouquet, often with names. A gorgeous gift for a mother or grandmother. See our birth flower guide.

No. 04

Engraved wooden cutting board

A kitchen heirloom with a family name or "est." date. Look for hardwoods like walnut, maple or oak, and check that the engraving is on the decorative side, not the chopping side.

No. 05

A dated keepsake ornament

The ornament that comes out every December and reminds everyone of that year: a first Christmas together, a new baby, a new home. Ceramic and wooden ornaments last longest.

No. 06

Initial necklace in gold-filled or sterling

Subtle, personal and worn every day. Check the metal carefully; our guide to jewelry metals explains why gold-filled lasts far longer than plated.

Ready-made: order by early December

No. 07

A hand-thrown stoneware mug

The gift that gets used every single morning. Aim for 300–400 ml, a glazed interior and a handle that fits two fingers. More on choosing ceramics.

No. 08

Hand-poured candle in a keepable vessel

Pick a crowd-pleasing scent like fig, cedar or fresh linen, and a vessel worth keeping afterwards. Our candle guide explains the waxes.

No. 09

A set of linen napkins

The easiest way to make every dinner feel special. Stonewashed linen is soft from day one and only gets better.

No. 10

A chunky hand-knit wool hat

Merino is soft enough for people who find wool scratchy. Many knitters offer custom colours.

Last-minute: still thoughtful

No. 11

A vintage record they'll love

A first pressing of an album from the year they were born, or the one they played to death as a teenager. Check the grading; VG+ is perfect for listening. How to buy vintage.

No. 12

A printable you frame locally

An instant digital download, printed on good paper at a local print shop and framed. Nobody will know it was a 23 December save.

A note on wrapping

Make the outside match the inside: kraft paper, twine and a sprig of rosemary, or a furoshiki cloth that becomes part of the gift. Ideas in our low-waste wrapping guide.
